July 31, 2005 was Heritage Bible Church's first service. This morning we celebrated our 4th anniversary as a church by having morning service at the park.

We showed up with our camp chairs and enjoyed a time of singing, praising God for all He's done for our church and sharing communion together.

Afterwards we shared a picnic and lots of great fellowship.

We praise God for our church family!

VBS Day 5

The final day of our VBS tour of Israel took us to Calvary where Jesus died so that we might live a life free from the guilt of sin. We are so thankful that He made that sacrifice. It was another great day in the sun learning about the Son!

A special treat of caramel apples was shared at snack time.

The kids really enjoyed them!

We want to give a special thank you to the team of friends and family who gave of their time to come up here and put on this wonderful VBS program! The kids and their parents loved it!

VBS Day 4

Day 4 of Passport to the Promised Land took us to Capernaum. The kids heard the story of a very sick little girl who died but was brought back to life by Jesus. Jesus wants us to believe that he will do great things - and He does!

Today was the hottest day of the week so the games involved water and gettting wet.

In crafts the kids experimented with Coke and mentos . . .

and Pastor Ryan shared another exciting object lesson.

Only one more day left! We will be sad to leave the Promised Land!

VBS Day 3

Our next stop on our Promised Land travels was the Sea of Galilee. Did you know that the Sea of Galilee is really a lake?

Jesus spent a lot of time around the Sea of Galilee with fishermen when he walked on the earth. The puppets told the kids about how they can become fishers of men.

During craft time the kids had their feet painted to make ther footprint and learn about following Jesus.

The kids have also been bringing in offering this week that will be sent over to Isreal to help out the Sudanese children who are leaving Africa to take refuge in Israel. They will use the money to buy shoes and clothes for the kids who have made the long, dangerous journey. The boys and girls are in competition to see who can bring the most money in. So far the girls are in the lead!

VBS Day 1 and 2

You can get your "Passport to the Promised Land" when you come to HBC this week. Kids 4 years old up through 6th grade have enjoyed "traveling" to different places in Israel to follow in Jesus' footsteps.

Monday we started off in Bethlehem and heard the story of Jesus' birth.

Today we headed to Nazereth where Jesus grew up and learned to be a carpenter.

The games are exciting,

the crafts are fun,

and the snacks are delicious!

A hard working crew from Whitney Baptist Church in Boise, Idaho came up this last week to do some work on our chruch building as a service project. The group of 11 youth along with Dan and Rebekah Frank and their family were such a blessing to our church. Their many hands tore down the rotting woodshed and finished the deck area and exposed wall where the shed once stood, put skirting on the base of the church and painted it, scraped peeling paint on the parsonage and put a fence up that will keep little kids from wandering too close to the slough. They also took part in our Sunday morning service by helping out with worship and the kid's program. We are so thankful for to them for giving of their time to help out.

Valentine's Banquet 2009

Last Sunday night was our Valentines Banquet at HBC. We had a delicious meal, fun games and and an all around great time. We started off the night with salad and rolls which was followed by Chicken Cordon Bleu, twice baked potatoes, and mixed vegetables. For dessert there was cheesecake, sheet cake, and cookies. We had plenty of food - that's for sure! A special thank you goes to Bruce for all his hard work in the kitchen and to everyone else who helped out with games, decorations, and serving. It was fun!

Youth Camping Trip '08

This summer's youth camping trip took us into the forests surrounding majestic Mt. Rainier. We stayed in a cabin which was a bonus because it rained a little. Our group of 16 had a great time scouting the woods for wildlife, playing horseshoes and riding bikes. There was an occasional pillow fight in the boys room, but everyone returned safely and seemed to have a great time!

What a blessing last Sunday was! We saw 6 people brave the cold Columbia waters to profess their faith in Christ through baptism. Please be praying for each individual, that they would continue to grow in their walk with Christ.

Bald Eagle Days

The big celebration of the summer in Cathlamet is Bald Eagle Days. For the past two years we have had a float in the Bald Eagle Parade and this year we had an extra special one. One of our craftsmen made a replica of our church which the kids rode in. We decorated it with dinosaurs to advertise our upcoming VBS program.
Monday starts our VBS festivities. 4 year olds to 6th graders are welcome to attend from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30. Check back to see posts of our dinosaur activities!

New Paint

KidZone

We had "Hat Night" a couple weeks ago at KidZone. Here are some of the kids that showed up with hats on. We also worked together to make pinatas in craft time and then busted them open during snack time. It didn't take too many wacks with the bat to break them open!

Valentine's Banquet

Fellowship hall was full of people this evening for Heritage Bible's Valentines Banquet. Bruce, our chef cooked up a delicious meal that was enjoyed by all. Several members of the youth group were our servers for the evening and did a great job taking orders and clearing tables. They received a nice tip at the end of the evening to be put into the youth fund for some future activities. Entertainment was somewhat comical this year as several of the men were nominated to read romantic poetry to their wife. They were graded on delivery and presentation. Dennis and Carol were our winners!

White Elephant

Last Sunday night we had our 2nd annual White Elephant Gift Exchange. It was a fun time with lots of laughs. The funniest part I think was when Norma opened the bag containing a Viking helmet complete with blond braids. It was quickly stolen from her by one of the members of the youth group. The items stolen the maximum 3 times were: a Starbucks coffee bundle, a case of cashews, and a china soup tureen. We are looking forward to this Sunday when we celebrate Jesus' birth at the last Sunday service before Christmas. Hope to see you there!

November News

November 6th was our first evening Ladies Bible Study at HBC. It was exciting to hear from these ladies about their desire to study the word. Praise God! We are studying "God's Goodness" and our next meeting will be December 4th.

Sunday, November 11th we had a Youth Video Rally. Different members of the youth group could be seen around the town of Cathlamet climbing trees, dancing and singing in the rain in front of the courthouse, and recording newscasts from the marina (among other strange assignments). All those who came seemed to enjoy themselves and even stated they would like to do it again!

We are in the process of picking paint colors for the sanctuary walls. Cracks and water spots are being covered and then painting can begin.

KidZone Catch-up

Well KidZone started up again at the beginning of September and we have been having a great time with those who are coming out! What a blessing it is to work with these kids. They are a fun bunch with lots of energy but they are also eager to listen and learn what God says in His word. Please be praying that we will see some of them come to Christ this year!

Church Building Restoration

There has been a lot of work going on at Heritage Bible Church this week. The little white church on Welcome Slough is getting some fresh paint, new siding and lots of TLC. Much of the bell tower and steeple is rotted so it will be replaced with vinyl siding that matches the rest of the church. Here is a "before" shot of the bell. Here is the "after" shot. That is Ryan up there painting it white. A window will cover the opening so the bell can be seen from across the slough and from the road.

Church Work Week

Today several hardworking members of our congregation showed up to do some work on the church building. Trim paint, electrical wiring in the fellowship hall, and window cleaning was all tackled today. We will be back at it tomorrow and the next day when we will have a lift to reach the steeple which needs some repair work and a paint job.

Heritage Bible's 2 year Anniversary

Today we celebrated our 2 year anniversary of the start of Heritage Bible Church. We had a joyous celebration service and then headed over to Jerry and Phyllis' for some BBQ steelhead and lots of other great food. After the potluck we headed out to the beach to see 3 of our church family members be baptized in the river. It was an exciting day. We are so thankful for how much God has blessed our church this past year. We have an awesome God who works in amazing ways!

A Hoppin' Good Time!

We had a great week at F.R.O.G.S. Club! We had a total of 26 kids come with an average of 22 or 23 a day. We are so thankful for our team of workers who came and put everything together for us. Thursday night was our evening program and all the kids sang songs for their parents and grandparents. It was a fun night. We finished off the week with some of the kids joining us on our FROG float for the Bald Eagle Days Parade. We received a 2nd place ribbon for our float.

F.R.O.G.S. Club

Today we kicked off our FROGS Club VBS program at Heritage Bible.The sanctuary and fellowship hall were decorated in swampy froggy style and kids showed up this morning for singing, crafts, games and Bible story time. A crew of 13 came up from Meridian First Baptist in Meridian, Idaho to put on the program. We had a great first day!

The Nightingales Come to Cathlamet

If you walked into Heritage Bible Church this morning you heard a powerful deep voice speaking God's word from the book of John. Jason and Sharon Nightingale were with us today for our morning and evening services. This evening we had a BBQ and then Jason quoted the book of Revelation. The Nightingales also shared about their ministries to orphans and widows in Liberia. It was such a blessing to see how God is using this amazing couple.

Welcome Knock Update

Our Welcome Knock ministry is going well. We have been visiting people who just moved into the community and giving them info about the church. We have also visited people who have come to church in the past, but aren't very regular or who have brought their kids to KidZone, but have never come on a Sunday morning. Some of the people visited showed up for Sunday service! Please continue to pray for this ministry. We also ask for your prayers for this summer's VBS program. There is a team coming from Meridian First Baptist in Idaho who will be putting the program on. Please pray that we will see some kids come to know the Lord this summer!

Welcome Knock

This summer on Wednesday nights we will be starting a new ministry, "Welcome Knock". We will be welcoming new people to our community and giving them some information about where to find things in Cathlamet and also about our church. Unless people receive the Wahkiakum newspaper there aren't many ways for them to find out about our church. We will also use this time to visit people who need some encouragement or prayer. We have a couple people who are really excited to help out in this ministry. Please pray that we will have great opportunities to reach out to our community.

Memorial Day

We had a nice service this morning with some patriotic songs and flag salute in honor of Memorial Day. Freedom is never free - whether it be the freedom we have as Americans or the freedom we have from sin as Christians. Praise God for our country and the men and women who have fought and fight today to protect it. Praise God for his son, Jesus who died so we might be free to have a relationship with the Father.

Well, it was another beautiful sunshiny Sunday night on the island, but tonight the kids came to church! 12 in KidZone and 12 in Youth Group. Please pray that we will find some more helpers - especially for the Youth Group. So far Ryan is the only one willing to take that on!
We had a productive business meeting this morning after service. We voted to put a spending limit on expenditures outside of the budget and also about hiring Norma to clean the church.

Kidzone went well tonight. We had a total of 10 with one first time visitor. It was another beautiful night (weather wise) so once again we were missing some of our non-church kids (that is kids who don't come to our other services). Christ is Risen!

We had a wonderful Easter celebration this morning. Our little church was pretty full with extra family and friends that showed up. We had some special music and some special goodies - YUM. Please pray for those who came and heard the gospel this morning. Pray their hearts and minds will be open to God's work in their lives.

March 25 update

When we started our KidZone program in the evenings we changed up Sunday School and have what we call Family Hour. Family Hour is meant to have all the church family together for a relaxed time that consists of a game/ice breaker, singing, and devotional. We hoped to get some of the younger families to come out and fellowship with the regular Sunday School crowd. So far we we've only had our regular Sunday School crowd in attendance.

KidZone was hopping tonight. We had one new kid giving us a total of 13 in KidZone. Ryan had his hands full trying to corral 13 that showed up for YouthZone.

Sorry we don't have any pictures to post yet. I did bring the camera tonight but forgot the memory card so that didn't help matters much.

We had a great time at KidZone tonight! 4 new kids showed up! Some of our regulars were missing because of illness and other reasons so we had 10 total. Ryan had 10 kids in youth group. Praise God! We are having fun.

We started our new children's program, KidZone, this last Sunday and things went great! We had 2 kids we knew from VBS come and one that we have never had before. There were 4 kids in the K1 class (3yrs-1st grade) and 5 in the K2 class (2nd-4th grade). There were 6 kids that showed up for youth group. They were a little sad they no longer had the whole church to themselves. There were a couple of our main families out of town with state basketball so we are expecting more to show up this Sunday. We weren't sure that our rotation schedule would work so it was nice to have a minimal number of kids when we ran through it the first time. We are looking forward to this Sunday night to see who God will bring through the doors! Thanks for your prayers!

New carpet in Fellowship Hall

The fellowship hall now has fresh paint and new carpet! There are a few remaining touches such as baseboard and electrical trim. We had our Valentines Dinner Sunday night and had close to 40 in attendance. Chef Bruce, prepared a marvelous feast consisting of ham, twice baked potatoes and vegetables. Very yummy! We had three couples "volunteer" to play the Newlywed Game. It was a great time of fun and laughter.

We are excited to start a new Sunday evening program for our children. We will start March 4th. Please pray for this opportunity to reach out to children in the community.

Great News! Friday, February 2nd our carpet is to be installed.

This last Sunday I mentioned a Sunday Evening kids club and told the church we need help. I am excited that some of our people stepped up to the plate and volunteered to help. I think we have the potential to reach many kids for Christ. Needless to say I'm really excited about Sunday night with youth group going as well as it is and now expanding it to reach the younger kids.

We just ended a short series on the "Posts that Hold our Church Up" - the essentials for a healthy church. The response has been great with many people responding to the upcoming challenges we have to reach out to the community.

I can't wait to see all the God is going to do this year at Heritage!

Starting Out

I just started this blog, so it's a little short on information and pictures about the church. Check back for more information and highlights regarding Heritage Bible.

A few highlights from this last week include: 14 at youth group Sunday night - Wow! We voted to put new carpet in the fellowship hall. It should be in within a week (I'll post a picture when it's done). We had one of our best Wednesday night studies as we took a look at the book of Ephesians. I'm looking forward to studying more about the work God did in Ephesus.
